Reports suggest AS Roma is weighing the possibility of reappointing Daniele De Rossi (41, Italy) as head coach following ongoing poor performances under Ivan Juric (49, Croatia). As Juric's tenure shows little sign of improvement, Roma may be looking to make another change.
On October 28, Calcio Mercato reported, “De Rossi is currently in New York, spending time with his family. Although he was dismissed last month, his contract with AS Roma remains valid until June 2027. The recent visit of a high-ranking Roma official to New York may indicate that the club is seriously considering his return.”
AS Roma originally parted ways with De Rossi in September due to lackluster results, a decision that surprised fans given his status as a club legend. Appointed in June, De Rossi was expected to help Roma regain their footing but was dismissed after only three months. Roma quickly moved to install Juric, known for his strong managerial skills demonstrated at clubs like Hellas Verona and Torino.
However, Juric's impact has been limited. While Roma started under him with two wins and a draw, the next five games saw just one win, one draw, and three losses. The recent 5-1 defeat to Fiorentina highlighted defensive weaknesses despite Roma’s 61% possession, allowing the opposition 21 shots on goal. Currently sitting 11th in the league, Roma finds itself only three points above the relegation zone.
In light of this poor form, Roma is reportedly considering dismissing Juric and, surprisingly, bringing back De Rossi. With his contract still active until 2027, De Rossi could theoretically return under the same terms to lead the team once again.
Beyond De Rossi, Roma is also exploring other managerial candidates. According to Rete Sport on October 28, Claudio Ranieri (73, Italy), who famously led Leicester City to a historic Premier League title, is a possible contender. Ranieri has previously managed Roma twice, first from 2009 to 2011, achieving a remarkable 25-game unbeaten streak. He returned briefly in 2019 to stabilize the team during a difficult period, earning praise from fans who even displayed a tribute banner during his final game, bringing him to tears.
As Roma faces tough decisions, they may turn to a familiar face, whether it be De Rossi’s youthful enthusiasm or Ranieri’s seasoned leadership. The coming days will be crucial as the club assesses its best option to steer Roma back on course.
